European leaders gathered in Kyiv to commemorate Ukraine’s Independence Day amidst Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country. Burnham co-chaired a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, supporting Ukraine against Russia’s aggression. He urged British industry to assist a Ukrainian initiative developing a cost-effective alternative to the Patriot air defense systems. Additionally, Burnham called for stronger sanctions on Russia and advocated for a ceasefire.
The visiting leaders pledged increased military and financial aid to Ukraine. Burnham announced the UK government’s approval for defense company MBDA to disclose classified information related to British components in the SCALP missile, facilitating plans for local production in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy stressed the importance of foreign assistance in the face of the Russian conflict, emphasizing the global significance of the war. Meanwhile, the Kremlin condemned Britain’s involvement, accusing the UK of fueling the conflict.
In response, Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine against the ongoing war. The conflict persists, with both sides engaging in long-range strikes to inflict economic damage and disrupt military operations.
