A man from Toronto has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the second-degree murders of two young women at a house party in Fort Erie, Ontario. The man, known as rapper Christopher Lucas or El Plaga, was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.
During the sentencing hearing in Welland, Superior Court Justice James Ramsay highlighted Lucas’s history of violence, his previous firearms-related convictions, and the impact of the killings on the victims’ families. The two victims, Christine Crooks, 18, of Toronto, and Juliana Pannunzio, 20, of Windsor, were shot during a birthday party at a rental property in Fort Erie in January 2021.
The court heard that an argument between Lucas and Crooks escalated, leading to Lucas shooting Crooks multiple times. It was believed that Crooks had called out for help before Lucas turned his gun on Pannunzio, who was fatally shot in what was described as an “execution-style” killing.
Justice Ramsay described Lucas’s actions as demonstrating a “chilling indifference to life,” particularly in the calculated killing of Pannunzio. Lucas, who came to Canada from the Democratic Republic of Congo at a young age, had a troubled upbringing in an area rife with gang activity.
Lucas’s criminal record, which includes previous violent and firearms-related offenses, played a significant role in determining his sentence. While a second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence, the judge has the discretion to set the parole eligibility period, which can range from 10 to 25 years.
Prosecutors argued for a 25-year parole ineligibility period, citing the community’s desire to denounce gun violence. The victim impact statements read in court by family members painted a picture of enduring grief and loss, with loved ones expressing their ongoing pain and sorrow over the tragic deaths.
Despite being given the opportunity to address the court, Lucas chose not to speak and remained impassive as he was led out of the courtroom. The devastating impact of the double murder was evident in the emotional statements made by the victims’ family members, who described the profound loss and lasting pain caused by the senseless killings.
