Thousands of individuals flocked to Buñol on Wednesday to partake in the annual La Tomatina food battle, where they drenched the quaint Spanish town in red using approximately 165 tonnes of overripe tomatoes. The chaotic clash lasted for over an hour in the town near València, with structures shielded by tarps in anticipation of the revelry. More than 20,000 participants are projected to join this year’s event, with 40 percent of attendees over the past three years being international tourists. Non-local visitors pay 15 euros for entry and are instructed to crush their tomatoes before throwing them to prevent injuries. Despite this rule, many opt to wear swim goggles and ear protection for added safety during the tomato mayhem.
