The Metropolitan Museum of Art has decided to cancel its upcoming exhibition dedicated to British designer John Galliano. The announcement comes after significant criticism from the Jewish community and others due to Galliano’s history of making antisemitic and racist remarks.
On Monday, the New York museum revealed that the exhibit, originally slated for the May 2027 spring Costume Institute show and the annual Met Gala launch, will be replaced by a different exhibition, with details to be disclosed later.
In a statement, Max Hollein, the museum’s director and CEO, shared, “After thoughtful discussions with John Galliano, we have mutually agreed to not move forward with the exhibition.” Galliano himself expressed remorse, stating, “After careful consideration and consultations with The Met and all involved parties, I have sadly concluded that it is best to postpone the exhibition. I take full responsibility for the pain caused by my past words, especially the harm inflicted on the Jewish and Asian communities, and I am deeply apologetic for it.”
Galliano, known for his extravagant designs, faced repercussions in 2010 and 2011 when his racist and antisemitic comments came to light, leading to his dismissal as the creative director of Christian Dior and a conviction in an antisemitism trial in France. Despite his departure from Dior, Galliano worked on personal and public initiatives to rebuild his reputation. In 2014, he made a comeback by joining Maison Margiela, a Parisian fashion house, where he served for a decade.
Initially set to be the third living designer to have a solo exhibition at the Met’s Costume Institute, Galliano’s show cancellation marks a significant shift. The Met Gala, which kicks off the spring season and is a prominent event in the fashion industry, is overseen by Anna Wintour, Vogue’s global editorial director and a notable figure in fashion circles. Wintour, a longtime supporter of Galliano, has been involved in organizing the gala.
Before announcing the exhibit, the museum engaged with leaders in the Jewish community to address potential concerns, but the backlash persisted. Among the critics was New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, who commended the decision to scrap the show. Menin emphasized that honoring Galliano amid rising antisemitism was insensitive and unacceptable, reflecting the sentiments of many.
