Tragic Loss: Beluga Whale Jelly Bean Dies in Spanish Aquarium

Date:

Oceanogràfic de València announced the passing of Jelly Bean, the third beluga whale from the recent transfer of marine animals from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont. Jelly Bean, who arrived at the Spanish aquarium less than a month ago with another beluga named Cleopatra and four dolphins, died unexpectedly on Friday night.

The aquarium revealed that Jelly Bean had been facing challenges with feeding in the days leading up to her death, which led to an increase in monitoring by the veterinary team. Despite showing signs of improvement and remaining responsive to her caregivers, Jelly Bean’s condition deteriorated, prompting the need for a necropsy to determine the cause of death.

Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed sadness over Jelly Bean’s passing and extended condolences to the staff at Oceanogràfic de València. Thompson emphasized that the Canadian government had taken necessary precautions to ensure the safe relocation of the whales, including conducting health assessments and issuing permits.

Unfortunately, the relocation efforts have been marred by the deaths of two other belugas, Peekachu and Rain, shortly after their transfers. The challenges of moving marine animals have been underscored by experts and animal rights advocates, who have raised concerns about the stress and health risks associated with such transfers.

The relocation of the belugas from Marineland to various facilities in the U.S. and Spain was initiated due to financial constraints at the park. Despite the tragic loss of Jelly Bean, the receiving facilities are committed to providing the remaining belugas and dolphins with the best care possible.

Animal Justice has been vocal about the risks involved in moving the belugas and has urged for greater transparency in the planning and execution of such relocations. The organization emphasized the need for independent health assessments to be made public to ensure the well-being of the animals during transfers.

Experts have highlighted the unprecedented nature of the beluga relocation and the challenges posed by transporting these animals. Concerns have been raised about the impact of stress on the belugas and the potential for adverse health outcomes as a result of the transfers.

The passing of Jelly Bean serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in wildlife rescue and relocation efforts, with stakeholders emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the well-being of the animals throughout the process.
