The 78th Emmy Awards night was filled with surprises, including nods to Canada, nods to the popular TV show Law & Order, and appearances by Taylor Swift. However, the biggest shock came from the winners themselves. Despite the Emmys typically favoring long-running series and established stars, Apple TV’s hit series Widow’s Bay made a remarkable sweep, clinching top honors for lead actor, supporting actress, supporting actor, director, and the coveted best comedy series award. The horror-comedy set a new record with 14 wins out of 19 nominations, surpassing the previous single-season record held by The Studio.
The most anticipated show of the night, The Pitt, led the nominations with 25 nods, winning the best drama series award and several supporting actress honors. Noah Wyle secured the outstanding lead actor in a drama series award, marking his second consecutive win in the category. The Pitt, however, lost the best supporting actor award to Tasks’ Tom Pelphrey. In another unexpected turn, The Diplomat’s Allison Janney won the best supporting actress in a comedy award, upsetting the competition.
The ceremony also featured light-hearted moments, such as host Mariska Hargitay’s Law & Order recreation and Taylor Swift’s playful appearance as an SVU detective. Sally Field’s heartfelt acceptance speech for Remarkably Bright Creatures included a special shoutout to Canada, where the series was filmed.
The late Catherine O’Hara was honored in a touching tribute by Macaulay Culkin, Annie Murphy, and Dan Levy, while Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, acknowledging his contributions to Parkinson’s disease awareness. Hacks, another standout at the awards, received multiple nominations and accolades, with lead Jean Smart winning best actress in a comedy.
Pluribus, a new dark comedy by Vince Gilligan, received significant recognition with 18 nominations and star Rhea Seehorn winning for outstanding lead actress in a drama series. The night showcased a mix of industry veterans and rising stars, underscoring the Emmys’ tradition of celebrating both established favorites and emerging talents.
