U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has appointed Jay Clayton, currently serving as the director of national intelligence, to lead the government’s efforts in maintaining U.S. dominance in artificial intelligence (AI). Clayton will head the newly established “Super Intelligence Force” (SIF), which will oversee interactions with various stakeholders such as consumers, religious groups, and AI companies.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump emphasized that the SIF’s primary goal is to ensure that the United States remains a global leader in Super Intelligence while safeguarding the interests and well-being of all Americans.
Clayton, who assumed the role of national intelligence chief in August, confirmed the news following a report by The Wall Street Journal. He underscored the importance of staying ahead in the AI field, stating that the consequences of falling behind could be significant.
The newly formed task force, led by Clayton, has been given a 120-day deadline to assess the risks and opportunities associated with AI. It will also recommend the federal government’s role in the AI landscape.
Concerns surrounding AI safety have escalated in recent weeks, with experts warning about potential risks, including the prospect of AI posing a threat to humanity within the next decade. Trump’s approach to AI regulation has been characterized by a light touch, emphasizing the need to maintain competitiveness against China.
Clayton’s panel will focus on reviewing AI-related risks, government response mechanisms, and enhancing federal capabilities within existing frameworks. The task force’s efforts aim to strengthen the country’s position in AI technology and ensure effective governance.
This marks the second time Trump has designated an adviser to oversee AI-related decisions at the government level. The task force, in addition to Clayton, will include prominent figures such as Andrew Ferguson, Emil Michael, and Scott Kupor. The panel will report its findings to the president and Susie Wiles, the White House chief of staff.
