“U.S. Treasury Secretary Denies State of War with Canada”

Date:

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that there is no state of war between the United States and Canada. He jokingly dismissed the idea of Canada posing a threat with submarines from the Edmonton mall. Bessent attributed the ongoing tension between the two countries to Prime Minister Mark Carney, suggesting that perpetuating the conflict benefits his popularity.

During an interview with CNBC, Bessent clarified that the trade relations between the U.S. and Canada do not constitute a trade war due to the significant disparity in size between the two nations. He humorously questioned the idea of Canada using submarines from a mall for any potential military action against the U.S.

Contrary to the humorous remarks, the use of submarines from the West Edmonton Mall for any practical purpose today is unfeasible. The recreational submarines at the mall ceased operations in 2005 and were dismantled in 2012.

The breakdown of a trade deal between the U.S. and Canada recently reignited verbal exchanges between the two nations. Carney, responding to last-minute changes proposed by the U.S. during negotiations, withdrew Canada’s negotiating team, citing unfair terms that could harm Canadian interests. This decision led to retaliatory tariffs being imposed by both countries.

Bessent criticized Carney for escalating the situation, accusing him of prioritizing political gains over the interests of the Canadian people. Meanwhile, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is set to engage with G20 counterparts in North Carolina to emphasize Canada’s reliability as a trading partner amid global uncertainties.

In the midst of the escalating trade tensions, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith highlighted the negative impacts of tariffs on businesses and workers in both countries. She advocated for a return to negotiations to alleviate the economic strain caused by the trade dispute. Smith expressed confusion over the U.S.’s approach towards Canada, given their historically strong alliance and integrated economies.

The ongoing trade dispute has prompted various reactions from political figures and officials on both sides, reflecting the complexities and challenges inherent in the current trade relationship.
