Team GB has earned their first gold medal at the Winter Olympics, thanks to Matt Weston’s victory in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, was a standout contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and dominated the competition from the beginning. After impressive performances in the first two heats, Weston held the lead with times of 56.21 and 55.88, totaling 1:52.09 going into the second day. He continued his streak with a remarkable time of 55.63 in the third heat.
In his final run, Weston set a track record with a time of 55.61, leading to an emotional celebration with his teammate Marcus Wyatt and Team GB coaches. This triumph marked a significant turnaround for Weston, who placed 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. On the other hand, Wyatt improved to finish seventh with a total time of 3:45.77.
Expressing his emotions after the win, Weston stated, “It means everything. It means a hell of a lot to me personally, I have worked so hard for this. Everyone back at home, my fiancee, my family, my friends, everyone that has sacrificed for me to be here. I have missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment and it feels amazing.”
Following Weston’s success, Team GB secured a spot on the Winter Olympics medal table. German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer clinched the silver and bronze medals respectively. Reflecting on Weston’s performance, Lizzie Yarnold commented on his exceptional speed and split-second decision-making, emphasizing the dedication and hard work that paid off.
Eve Muirhead, Team GB’s chef de mission, expressed her joy for Weston’s achievement, praising his composure under pressure and stellar performance. The victory not only marked Team GB’s first medal of the Olympics but also highlighted Weston’s resilience and talent in the sport.
