“EMT’s Murder Trial Unveils Shocking Affair and Foul Play”

Date:

Kevin West, a seasoned Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with a 25-year career, served as a Battalion Chief for the Camas-Washougal Fire Department in Washington in 2024. He was married to Marcelle, also known as Marcy, and they had been a couple for 20 years, raising two grown children. Marcy, aged 48, worked as a hospital clerk and was admired by her colleagues for her compassionate nature.

Early on January 8, 2024, West dialed 911 from his residence, reporting that his wife was experiencing a seizure and was unresponsive. He mentioned administering CPR to her. Emergency responders, including some of West’s coworkers, arrived on the scene and took over resuscitation efforts, but unfortunately, Marcy was declared deceased at 5:11 am.

According to West’s account to the authorities, the evening before the incident, he and Marcy had shared a takeout meal and watched television. They had engaged in intimacy around 8 p.m., following which Marcy complained of a headache, took some medication, vomited, and retired to bed early, as headaches were a common issue for her.

West claimed that he had gone to bed around 11 p.m. and was awakened around 4 a.m. by his wife’s seizure in their bed. He detailed his actions of moving her to the floor and attempting to revive her. Concerns arose among friends and coworkers regarding West’s behavior in the aftermath. They observed him removing photographs, questioning the timing of discarding Marcy’s belongings, and even selling items on Facebook Marketplace.

Initially deemed inconclusive, Marcy’s death came under scrutiny when individuals approached the authorities with suspicions about the circumstances. It was disclosed that West had been involved in an extramarital affair with a woman named Cynthia Ward, and their interactions had been noted during the period when grieving was expected.

West and Cynthia initially met in 2004 when she volunteered in his department, leading to a brief intimate relationship. They reconnected in 2023, and their involvement grew more serious. Following a second autopsy that revealed evidence of asphyxia and blunt force trauma to the neck, Marcy’s cause of death was reclassified as foul play.

Investigations concluded that West had strangled his wife in bed and concocted a false narrative of a seizure, leveraging his paramedic skills. Financial scrutiny indicated a motive, as West desired a divorce but was financially strained due to a substantial mortgage. Marcy would have been entitled to alimony, which West could not afford.

Two months post-Marly’s demise, West, then 52, was arrested. While on bail awaiting trial, he resided with Cynthia and they became engaged. During the trial, the prosecution contended that West felt pressured to terminate his marriage and embark on a new life with Cynthia, whom he had developed an intense attachment to, but without incurring alimony expenses.

Evidence such as texts and letters showcased West’s plans to move out in January and pursue a divorce. Further revelations included a Christmas card from West to Cynthia found in his garage, expressing aspirations for the upcoming year together. Testimony and data analysis indicated discrepancies in West’s account of events leading up to Marcy’s death.

Despite acknowledging the affair and marital issues, West denied intentions of living with Cynthia or marrying her, despite the current living arrangement. The defense posited that Marcy’s preexisting health conditions, including headaches, and a massage administered by her son, could have contributed to the fatal seizure.

Cynthia testified about her relationship with West, spanning two decades and intensifying in 2023. West, while admitting to the affair and marital difficulties, emphasized that he had no immediate plans to cohabit with Cynthia or marry her. However, circumstances indicated otherwise, leading to his engagement while on bail.

During the trial, West demonstrated his actions using a mannequin to illustrate moving Marcy for CPR, refuting allegations of a “chokehold” and expressing inability to explain the neck injuries. Sentenced to 25 years in prison for first-degree and second-degree murder, West’s family faced division over his guilt or innocence, with his daughter Megan criticizing his actions, while his son Ted maintained his support and trust in his father.

West, maintaining his innocence, expressed remorse over the affair but denied involvement in Marcy’s death. Despite his protestations, the judge deemed his medical knowledge
