Trump Urges UK to Secure Own Oil Amidst Crisis

Date:

Donald Trump has distanced himself from the escalating Middle East crisis by advising Britain to secure its own oil supply amidst global fuel shortages. The US President asserted that he had fulfilled his responsibility by initiating military action against Iran, placing the onus on allies like the UK to address the aftermath by reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Despite Trump’s criticism of Britain, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the royal visit to the US will proceed as planned, featuring a state dinner at the White House and a congressional address commemorating American independence.

Criticism of the royal visit has emerged, with opposition leader Ed Davey deeming it a “humiliation” to send the monarch while Trump disregards the UK. Trump’s provocative remarks, conveyed through a confrontational post on Truth Social, severely rebuked the ‘Special Relationship’ at a critical juncture when the economic repercussions of the conflict are beginning to impact.

Singling out Britain, Trump highlighted the ample jet fuel reserves in the US and suggested that European nations should purchase supplies from America, disregarding prevailing global market dynamics. Meanwhile, the UK faces mounting concerns over aviation fuel shortages, awaiting the arrival of the last known Middle East shipment within 48 hours.

The Libyan-flagged Maetiga vessel, en route from Saudi Arabia, is scheduled to dock on Thursday, according to shipping data sources. With the Strait of Hormuz blocked by Iran, the UK’s reliance on the Middle East for jet fuel imports has been exposed, exacerbated by reduced domestic refining capacity and the cessation of Russian imports post-Ukraine invasion in 2022.

Amidst escalating economic fallout, there are anticipations of increased household energy bills and escalating petrol prices as the Ofgem price cap review approaches in July. Fertiliser shortages pose a threat to food prices, while disruptions in aluminium supplies could impact manufacturing. Despite the profound shock, there is no immediate indication of substantial government intervention, despite higher energy prices contributing to enhanced tax revenues.

In an online post, Trump urged countries facing jet fuel shortages due to the Strait of Hormuz crisis, like the UK, to procure from the US and take assertive actions to secure oil supplies. His Secretary of Defence echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for international cooperation in resolving the critical waterway issues.

Trump’s shifting approach, oscillating between escalation threats and hints of military drawdown, has raised concerns about the coherence of US strategy. The risks to global shipping were underscored by an attack on a Kuwaiti oil tanker, intensifying fears over maritime security. Israel’s military operations in southern Lebanon to counter Iran-backed forces further compound the regional conflict sparked by initial strikes.

RAC data reveals the significant impact on UK motorists, with diesel prices surpassing £100 for the first time in over three years, and petrol prices soaring since the conflict inception. The aviation sector faces mounting challenges, with jet fuel prices surging and potential shortages looming at major European hubs. With approximately 40% of Europe’s jet fuel passing through the Strait of Hormuz, airlines are devising contingency plans to navigate the escalating crisis.
