The Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina experienced a power outage just 10 minutes after commencing, leading to a temporary halt in the proceedings. The curling events marked the beginning of the Games, but participants had to pause when the lights suddenly went off.
While the official Opening Ceremony at the San Siro was scheduled for Friday, some sporting events had already kicked off. The initial mixed doubles round robin matches in curling had to be stopped due to a power failure at the Olympic Ice Stadium.
Officials interrupted play during the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds in the first end against Norway. Despite the delay, the British curlers maintained a positive attitude, with Dodds even seen laughing during the disruption while officials managed the situation.
Commentator Steve Cram from the BBC, finding humor in the situation, mentioned the power cut at the stadium, causing a brief pause in play as the scoring screens went dark. However, after a delay of approximately five minutes, the lights were restored, and the competition resumed, much to the crowd’s amusement.
Dodds and Mouat secured an impressive 8-6 victory to kick off the round robin phase, with Mouat downplaying the unexpected interruption, describing it as a fun dance-like experience. He praised the venue’s atmosphere, ice quality, and the overall positive vibe.
Looking ahead, the UK aims to surpass its previous Winter Games medal count record of five, achieved in Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018. With continued investment from sources like the National Lottery and government funding, UK Sport has allocated over £32.5m for the current four-year cycle to enhance its presence in winter sports.
Eve Muirhead OBE, a gold medalist from the Beijing 2022 Games, has transitioned from an elite athlete to a leadership role in Team GB. As the Chef de Mission for Milan-Cortina 2026, she expressed confidence in the team’s potential to challenge established norms, emphasizing the talent and determination within the 2026 squad.
