“Disabled Persons Railcard: Wider Eligibility, 33% Discount!”

Date:

Starting today, a wider group of individuals, including Blue Badge holders, will be eligible for the Disabled Persons Railcard, providing them with a 33% discount on rail tickets. This extension of eligibility encompasses both visible and non-visible disabilities, allowing more people to benefit from an average yearly savings of £126. The cost of the railcard is £20 for a one-year validity or £54 for three years. Additionally, one person aged 16 or above traveling with the cardholder can also avail of the discount.

The criteria for obtaining a Disabled Persons Railcard remain unchanged, ensuring continued accessibility. The recent expansion of eligibility was initially announced in November 2025, with further extensions planned for September 2026. The upcoming update later this year will include individuals with long-term or degenerative medical conditions and certain forms of neurodiversity affecting their ability to use train services.

Detailed information regarding the required evidence and application procedures for the expanded eligibility will be released before September. Jacqueline Starr, the Executive Chair and CEO at Rail Delivery Group, emphasized the significance of broadening the railcard’s eligibility to enhance inclusivity and accessibility for passengers. Rail Minister, Lord Hendy, highlighted the milestone achieved in making rail travel more affordable and inclusive, emphasizing the commitment to improving accessibility in the railway network through initiatives like the Accessible Railways Roadmap under Great British Railways.
