Ocado has announced intentions to eliminate approximately 1,000 positions in a move to save about £150 million. The online grocery retailer stated that the job reductions will impact roughly 5% of its workforce, with the majority affecting its UK operations, particularly at the Ocado headquarters in Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The company plans to streamline research and development by merging Ocado Solutions and Ocado Intelligent Automation into a single division.
The job cuts will not impact the Ocado retail division. Ocado disclosed the staff reduction as part of its recent financial results, which showed a significant profit increase. The company reported a 12.1% growth in group revenue to £1.36 billion for the fiscal year ending November 30, 2025, with adjusted EBITDA climbing 59% to £178 million.
Tim Steiner, the CEO of Ocado, stated, “Our ongoing investment in research and development will be focused on areas that offer the most value to Ocado and our partners. We are also restructuring parts of our organization to align with our commercial strategy and simplify our operating model as we expand into various international markets post the expiration of exclusive agreements.”
“These changes will also reflect the reduced structural cost base we have been working towards in recent years. Unfortunately, this means that a significant number of positions will become redundant. We appreciate the contributions of the impacted colleagues and will provide support throughout this transition.”
Established in 2000 by Tim Steiner, Jason Gissing, and Jonathan Faiman, former Goldman Sachs employees, Ocado offers around 50,000 products, including popular brands like M&S food alongside its own product line.
