The UK is set to experience snowfall in certain regions today, according to the latest update from the Met Office. Weather maps indicate that some parts of the country could receive over 15cm of snow along with subzero temperatures. Despite the impending arrival of April, the nation is currently under the grip of a cold front due to low-pressure systems ushering in Arctic weather from the northwest.
The chilly conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, although there are positive indications that temperatures will climb later in the week, reaching double digits across much of the UK. The prevailing low-pressure system is projected to shift northwards by the end of today, allowing high-pressure influence from the Atlantic to take over.
Met Office forecaster Honor Criswick mentioned, “Although temperatures remain quite cold this morning, a westerly shift will introduce milder Atlantic air from Tuesday onwards, providing relief from the recent chilliness.”
For today, the Met Office has highlighted northern areas as prone to snowfall. Forecasters predict initial snow over hilly terrains in the north, which is expected to improve gradually as the day progresses.
The regions most likely to witness snowfall include elevated areas in Scotland, notably the Highlands, the Cairngorms, Glencoe, Lochaber, and the vicinity of Ben Nevis. Additionally, there is a possibility of wintry showers in the Southern Uplands and on higher routes through the Pennines, although any snowfall in northern England is anticipated to be confined to hilltops.
The Met Office’s latest report states, “Showers in the north are expected to persist this morning, initially bringing snow over the hills, but easing gradually throughout the day. Southern regions will predominantly remain dry with occasional sunny intervals, although isolated showers cannot be ruled out. Winds are expected to weaken.”
Current weather maps depict temperatures around -1°C in central Scotland by midday today and single-digit figures across most parts of the UK. Northern Scotland could see up to 16cm of snow accumulation.
