“British Expats Struggle with New UK Passport Regulations”

Date:

British grandparents residing abroad are altering their travel plans to return to the UK to visit their families due to newly implemented passport regulations. Lynne and Geoff Crellin, who had been looking forward to a summer trip to the UK to reconnect with relatives and explore their homeland, are now reconsidering their intentions due to the strict regulations that are now in effect. The couple, based in Grimsby, Ontario, are contemplating cancelling their visit as dual citizens like them must now comply with the new passport requirements under the electronic travel authorisation (ETA) scheme when entering the UK or risk being denied entry at the border.

Under the updated rules, individuals holding dual British citizenship, including children, are mandated to present a British passport or an alternative valid passport with a certificate of entitlement upon arrival at the border. The certificate carries a one-time fee of £589. Approximately 1.2 million British nationals are now facing significant expenses simply to enter their own country if they do not possess a valid British passport, despite their British nationality, as they were previously able to visit the UK using their other passport.

For the Crellins, the financial burden and inconvenience associated with obtaining the necessary documents do not justify their short visit plans to London. Geoff expressed their dilemma, highlighting that the new ETA requirement to enter the UK with a British passport is likely to lead to the cancellation of their upcoming trip. Given their advanced age and the brevity of their planned visit, investing in new British passports does not make economic sense for them.

Geoff and Lynne’s situation is not unique, as others like Clive Martin and his family are also facing a similar dilemma. Martin shared that due to the ETA requirements, they decided to apply for new UK passports, incurring costs of approximately $600 (£324) and facing travel restrictions until their applications are processed by the UK government. Concerns have been raised about potential delays in application processing due to the influx of similar requests following the revised ETA regulations.

The Home Office has clarified that the UK is transitioning to an updated digital immigration system to enhance border security, with international carriers now required to verify passengers’ valid permission to travel to the UK. British citizens must possess a British passport or a foreign passport endorsed with a certificate of entitlement for entry. Some expired British passports may be accepted at the carriers’ discretion as alternative documentation.
