Sky, Freeview, and Virgin Media viewers will soon have fewer options on their TV guides as two popular children’s channels, Pop and Tiny Pop, are set to be removed starting December 2025. These channels, known for airing shows like Pokémon, LEGO Friends, and Hello Kitty, cater to a young audience with content airing all day and night.
The decision to take these channels off the air is driven by commercial considerations, with the Managing Director of Narrative, Paul Dunthorne, citing a significant decline in the commercial value of kids’ TV in the UK over the past decade. The closure of the linear Pop channel is a reflection of the challenges faced by free-to-air channels targeting younger viewers without substantial funding akin to public service broadcasters.
However, despite the channel shutdown, the content will still be accessible through online platforms known as FAST channels, requiring internet-enabled devices to watch. The Pop presence will be maintained on these platforms in the UK and internationally to explore commercial opportunities.
On the bright side, Sky is introducing Disney Jr., a new kids’ TV channel featuring popular shows like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+, Marvel’s Spidey, and his Amazing Friends, among others. This addition to the Sky Kids package will commence on November 13, offering a range of beloved preschool hits for children aged 2-6.
Viewers can enjoy Disney Jr. through the TV guide or on-demand on various Sky devices, including Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and Sky+, as well as the Sky Go app. Additionally, Disney Jr. content will be available for streaming on Disney+.
Overall, while the removal of Pop and Tiny Pop may disappoint some viewers, the arrival of Disney Jr. on Sky promises a new and exciting lineup of shows for young audiences to enjoy.
