Royal Mail Alerts of Service Delays in 100+ UK Postcodes

Date:

Royal Mail has raised concerns this week regarding potential delays in service in more than 100 UK postcodes. The postal service identified 38 delivery offices that may experience disruptions due to severe weather conditions and increased employee absences. These offices collectively cover approximately 100 postcodes throughout the country.

According to a company spokesperson, adverse weather conditions, including storms named Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra in January, combined with higher-than-usual sick leave, have caused temporary disruptions to certain delivery routes. The company emphasized that the majority of mail is still being delivered as scheduled, acknowledging the frustration associated with delayed deliveries.

In response to any route delays, Royal Mail stated that it will mobilize additional resources to expedite the restoration of normal delivery services. This announcement follows a report by the BBC, which highlighted instances of letters being held in Royal Mail offices for extended periods, with claims from anonymous postal workers suggesting that packages were receiving priority over letters in some depots.

Royal Mail noted the shift towards more parcel deliveries due to the rise of online shopping, while the volume of addressed letters passing through its network has been declining. The company, which serves nearly two million postcodes, is committed to delivering mail six days a week and strives to maintain punctual deliveries for both letters and parcels.

Last year, the regulatory body Ofcom approved Royal Mail’s proposal to discontinue second-class letter deliveries on Saturdays and adjust the service to alternate weekdays. Although this change was initiated as a trial in 35 delivery offices, its nationwide expansion to all 1,200 sites has been postponed due to challenges in reaching an agreement with the Communication Workers Union.
