Donald Trump has stated that Iran’s new leader, who he described as less radicalized, has requested a ceasefire from the United States. However, Trump emphasized that the US will only consider it once the Strait of Hormuz is fully open and operational. Until then, he asserted that the US will continue military actions against Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Iran’s new president for seeking a ceasefire and indicated that discussions would take place when conditions in the Strait of Hormuz meet the US criteria. Iran has not responded to these claims, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously denying any ongoing negotiations with the US.
Trump mentioned on Tuesday that the US intends to withdraw from the conflict in a relatively short timeframe, possibly within two to three weeks, contingent upon Iran’s commitment to not acquiring nuclear weapons.
This latest development follows Iran publicly dismissing Trump’s attempts to mediate a ceasefire in the Middle East, questioning the validity of his negotiations. Iranian military spokesperson Ebrahim Zolfaqari mocked Trump’s efforts, insinuating that he was negotiating with himself rather than genuine representatives of Iran.
Furthermore, Trump criticized the UK, targeting Keir Starmer and the Royal Navy, suggesting that Britain lacks the capability to assist in the Middle East conflict. He questioned the UK’s naval strength and military investments, implying they were inadequate.
In response to Trump’s remarks, Starmer affirmed his commitment to acting in the national interest despite the criticism. He defended NATO as a crucial military alliance, countering Trump’s contemplation of withdrawing the US from the organization.
