Anthony Joshua’s Nigerian Driver Faces Charges after Fatal Crash

Date:

Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is set to face charges for ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s close associates. Reports from The Daily Mail indicate that a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, who has been integral to his visits to the country, will be formally charged within the next 48 hours.

The driver, who was discharged from a Lagos hospital on New Year’s Eve, was moved to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred. Following his release, he was extensively questioned and provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the accident, which resulted in the deaths of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, two of Joshua’s dear friends.

Anthony Joshua, who has also been discharged from the hospital, recently paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home, accompanying his mother in the solemn gesture. According to a police source cited by the Mail, the driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. A charging decision is anticipated within the next 48 hours, with the possibility of a court appearance for reckless driving.

The incident occurred when Joshua was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by authorities. Preliminary investigations suggest that overspeeding by the SUV carrying Joshua led to a burst tire and subsequent loss of control, resulting in the fatal crash.

Eddie Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed his condolences for Ghami and Ayodele, acknowledging their passing with heartfelt tributes. In other news, Sky has announced a discounted Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the upcoming 2025/26 season, offering significant savings and an expanded lineup of live matches across various leagues, including the Premier League. Sky is set to broadcast over 215 live Premier League games next season, a substantial increase from previous coverage.
