Greece is making preparations for potential attacks from Iran, signaling a significant escalation of conflict extending beyond the Middle East.
The Greek government recently conducted a scheduled exercise involving a coastguard helicopter responding to a simulated drone attack on an oil tanker in the Bay of Elefsina, near Athens. This exercise led to a rescue operation for two crew members who fell overboard during the drill.
Merchant Marine Minister Vasilis Kikilias emphasized the importance of such preventative drills in times of uncertainty, stressing the need to ensure operational readiness.
In the aftermath of the exercise, a post by United States Secretary of Defense advisor Douglas Macgregor highlighted Greece’s readiness for a potential Iranian attack.
The region surrounding Greece has been tumultuous following joint military actions by the US and Israel against Iran, with Iran retaliating by targeting various sites across the Middle East, including a UK military base in Cyprus.
An attack on Greece could shift the conflict into Europe, potentially involving NATO allies due to Greece’s membership in the alliance. NATO’s Article 5 dictates that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all members.
Recent warnings have been issued, urging caution to tourists as hotels may become targets of potential Iranian attacks. The US Department of State Consular Affairs mentioned tracking threats against locations frequented by American citizens in Saudi Arabia, advising increased vigilance at hotels and other gathering spots.
Furthermore, a Worldwide Caution Security Alert reiterated the need for heightened caution for Americans globally.
