A generous donor from the Labour party has taken a proactive stance against potential government actions to restrict children’s access to social media. Dale Vince, known for his outspoken views, criticized tech giants like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he described as their unchecked influence on children.
Responding to parents’ top concern, the founder of Ecotricity, a green energy company, has introduced a mobile plan that allows children unlimited calls and texts but excludes internet access. Millionaire Mr. Vince argued that this traditional phone plan is necessary due to the harmful content children encounter online, calling on government officials to take action.
The move comes amidst growing pressure on the government to implement a ban on social media access for those under 16. In a recent development, over 60 Labour MPs urged PM Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead, which implemented such a ban in December. Several other countries are reportedly contemplating similar measures, with Sir Keir keeping all options open.
One of Mr. Vince’s ventures, Ecotalk, has launched a new SIM-only mobile plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited UK calls and texts starting from £4 per month. Unlike most existing options, this plan does not provide internet access.
Explaining the rationale behind the initiative, Mr. Vince stated that the goal is to limit the influence of tech moguls like Musk and Zuckerberg on children. He emphasized that this move was driven by customer demand, particularly from parents seeking a phone that enables communication without online distractions. Mr. Vince highlighted the issue of irresponsible tech platforms exposing young people to undue pressure and risks.
Ecotalk, established by Mr. Vince in 2018, is collaborating with renowned presenter Chris Packham, who serves as its chief ecologist, to undertake rewilding and restoration projects in Sussex and Devon.
