NASA recently unveiled the food menu for the four astronauts embarking on the 10-day Artemis II mission in space, sparking surprise among the public. The mission, launched on April 1 by NASA, is a historic event as it marks the first time in over five decades that four astronauts have traveled to space and orbited the moon. The spacecraft, propelled by NASA’s Space Launch System rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is carrying the crew aboard the Orion spacecraft for a planned test flight around the moon and back. This mission signifies a crucial step in NASA’s strategy to return humans to the lunar surface.
During the 10-day mission, the crew will enjoy a variety of meals specially prepared for space consumption. NASA’s Artemis II menu includes dishes such as barbecued beef brisket, vegetable quiche, broccoli au gratin, and macaroni and cheese. The beverages on offer range from a mango-peach smoothie to coffee, with an estimated consumption of 43 cups of coffee by the astronauts.
NASA emphasized that the food selection for Artemis II is meticulously chosen to support the crew’s health and performance during their mission around the Moon. Despite the constraints of no resupply, refrigeration, or late-loading capability, the meals are designed to be safe, shelf-stable, and easy to prepare and consume in the spacecraft.
In addition to the main menu, NASA disclosed that the crew will have access to five different hot sauces in space, along with flavoring options like maple syrup, chocolate spread, peanut butter, and honey strawberry jam. The food supply also includes sweet treats such as cookies, chocolate, cake, candy-coated almonds, cobbler, and pudding.
