“Google’s ChromeOS Flex USB Kit Revives Old Laptops”

Date:

Microsoft ceased official support for Windows 10 nearly six months ago, impacting countless laptops that are now vulnerable to cyber threats due to the lack of essential security updates. While some newer devices can transition to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs often fall short of the system requirements, forcing users to make tough choices.

Options for users of unsupported laptops include continuing to use them as is, paying for extended updates (ESUs), or investing in new devices with Windows 11 pre-installed. However, there is now an additional solution for aging computers to prolong their usability and prevent them from being discarded.

Google has partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes old laptops by installing ChromeOS Flex, a lightweight operating system that can convert these devices into Chromebook-style machines. Users gain access to popular services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the expense of purchasing new hardware.

Although ChromeOS Flex has always been available for free download from Google, the new USB kits streamline the installation process. Users can even test the system from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The kits have been in high demand, with stocks currently depleted.

In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, putting those computers at risk of obsolescence. This left many people with a difficult decision: spend hundreds on a new device, or continue using an insecure, outdated one.”

Google’s ChromeOS Flex USB Kit, priced around £3, offers a sustainable solution, with the USB stick being reusable, reducing electronic waste. As demand surges, the item is currently listed as out of stock on Back Market.

Besides extending the life of old laptops, Google highlights the environmental benefits of ChromeOS Flex. “The manufacturing process of a new laptop is responsible for a large part of its carbon footprint,” Google explained. “ChromeOS Flex allows the already-manufactured device to be used for longer, which keeps hardware out of landfills and avoids the emissions of making a new device. Savings do not stop there, ChromeOS also consumes 19% less energy on average than other comparable systems.”

compatible with ChromeOS Flex for those considering the switch.
