A tragic incident unfolded in Nicaragua as a CEO mother lost her life in a devastating tourist transport crash while vacationing with her family. Kasey Grelle, aged 41 and a co-founder of the successful marketing consulting firm Aux Insights, passed away on March 23 following the accident at the Rancho Santana resort in Tola. Her 11-year-old son sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
The family was aboard a tourist transport truck carrying approximately 28 foreign passengers when the vehicle lost control and rolled down a hill at the resort. Kasey succumbed to her injuries while en route to the hospital, while her son Julian suffered severe head trauma, skull fractures, spine fractures, and a collapsed lung. The crash also resulted in injuries to over 20 individuals, including children, as reported by Nicaraguan media outlet TN8.
Kasey, remembered as a compassionate and accomplished individual, leaves behind her husband Dave and their three young children – Julian, Kit, and Des. Her brother, Andy Joyce, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and highlighted Kasey’s exceptional qualities in a Facebook post.
A fundraising campaign on GoFundMe, aimed at supporting the Grelle children, has raised over $310,000 (£234,000) surpassing the initial goal of $250,000. Kasey had been the primary provider for the family following her husband’s serious injuries in a prior accident. She played a pivotal role in establishing Aux Insights, a marketing consultancy in St. Louis that specializes in assisting private equity firms to enhance their performance.
Before her entrepreneurial ventures, Kasey built a successful career in venture capital and corporate dealmaking, serving as the CEO of Gateway Media where she played a significant role in financial restructuring before its sale. Originally starting out as a TV news reporter, she transitioned to finance and entrepreneurship after completing an MBA at Washington University in St. Louis.
Authorities in Nicaragua, specifically the National Police, are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic crash.
