“Lidl to Open 50+ New Stores, Create 2K Jobs”

Date:

Lidl’s growth strategy includes opening over 50 new stores within the next year, leading to the creation of 2,000 jobs. This initiative is part of a substantial £600 million investment plan, with locations such as Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire earmarked for new store openings this summer. The supermarket chain aims to secure various property types, including freehold, leasehold, and long leasehold, across Great Britain.

With a current presence of more than 1,000 stores and over 35,000 employees in the UK, Lidl is committed to expanding its reach and impact on local communities. Ryan McDonnell, the chief executive of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s goal of fostering regional growth through job creation and supporting British suppliers.

In response to Lidl’s investment and job creation efforts, Employment Minister Kate Dearden praised the supermarket for generating thousands of quality jobs with fair wages, ultimately enhancing living standards across different regions. Lidl also recently announced a pay raise for its employees, with entry-level wages increasing to £13.45 per hour nationwide, reaching £14.45 based on tenure, and London’s new starter pay rising from £14.35 to £14.80, up to £15.30 with length of service.

The supermarket’s commitment to its workforce is reflected in its ongoing investments, including a £29 million increase in wages. Recent sales data indicates a significant 10% surge in sales over the Christmas period, with over 51 million customers shopping at Lidl. The UK business achieved a turnover exceeding £1.1 billion in the four weeks leading up to Christmas Eve, with a record-high increase in shopper numbers and sales of seasonal produce.

Ryan McDonnell highlighted Lidl’s success during the festive season, attributing it to the company’s focus on offering quality British products at competitive prices, which has garnered increased customer loyalty. As the fastest-growing physical supermarket chain, Lidl continues to expand its reach and provide value to customers nationwide.
