Easter Getaway Chaos: Fuel Prices Soar, Shortages Loom

Date:

Millions of drivers gearing up for the busiest Easter getaway in recent years are set to encounter challenges at the fuel pumps, potential queues, and concerns over fuel shortages. The AA predicts that 19.6 million motorists will hit the roads on Good Friday, with numbers expected to rise to almost 20.3 million on Easter Saturday. Additionally, Easter Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday are forecasted to see high traffic volumes.

The surge in fuel prices, attributed to the Iran conflict, has led to significant cost increases for drivers. Unleaded prices have soared by nearly 22p per liter to an average of 154.45p, while diesel prices have spiked by 43p per liter to an average of 185.23p.

RAC’s head of policy, Simon Williams, expressed concerns over the sharp rise in fuel prices, stating that drivers will face steep costs during the Easter weekend. The sudden price hikes have added £11 to the cost of filling a 55-liter family car with petrol and £22 for the diesel equivalent.

Despite the busy roads, an AA poll reveals that most drivers plan to keep their journeys short, with over half expecting to travel distances under 50 miles. Hotspots for traffic congestion during the holiday period include the M6 through Birmingham, the M25 in the South East, the M5 in the South West, and the A303 in Wiltshire, among others.

Drivers are advised to be mindful of local events that may contribute to traffic congestion. Additionally, they are encouraged to conduct vehicle checks before embarking on journeys, focusing on essential areas such as fuel, lights, oil, water, electrics, and rubber.

In light of reports of sporadic fuel shortages at petrol stations, families are urged to plan ahead and stay informed about the availability of fuel. The Strait of Hormuz has become a focal point in the Iran conflict, raising concerns about global oil supply.

Weather warnings for strong winds and snow have been issued across various regions, with Storm Dave expected to bring heavy snowfall to northern Scotland. Delays in transportation services are likely, and people are advised to prepare for adverse weather conditions.
