The US, under President Donald Trump’s leadership, has announced plans to impose a ‘blockade’ on the Strait of Hormuz. This decision follows unsuccessful peace talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan, with tensions escalating as the US Navy prepares to block all ships entering or leaving the critical shipping passage.
President Trump mentioned that the US military, along with unspecified international partners, will enforce the blockade. Notably, the UK will not participate in this action, as reported by the Press Association.
In response, a government spokesperson emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz to support the global economy and daily living costs. Efforts are being made to collaborate with France and other allies to safeguard navigation rights in the region.
While discussions in Islamabad were generally positive, the issue of Iran’s nuclear program remains a sticking point. President Trump reiterated his stance that Iran must not possess or enhance its nuclear capabilities.
The situation is compounded by Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for 20% of global oil trade. Iran’s actions have led to a surge in fuel prices worldwide since the conflict began on February 28.
President Trump, via social media, condemned Iran for causing disruption and suffering by not fulfilling promises to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The US Navy has been tasked with implementing the blockade and removing any sea mines laid by Iran in the area.
Despite some ships passing through during negotiation pauses, the US military will intercept vessels that paid unauthorized tolls to Iran. Any attempts to resist will face severe consequences, according to President Trump.
The President asserted that Iran is on the losing end of the conflict, highlighting significant damage to Iran’s military capabilities. He warned of further military actions if necessary to address Iran’s behavior.
