“UK Broadband Users Face Evening Slowdowns, Wigan Worst Hit”

Date:

Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with the challenge of internet congestion, particularly during the evening hours. This congestion occurs when multiple households are simultaneously engaging in activities like streaming movies, downloading files, and video chatting, leading to a noticeable decrease in internet speeds.

Analogous to a motorway, broadband experiences slower speeds when traffic is high. This explains why performance dips significantly between 7pm and 11pm when network usage peaks as people return home from work.

A recent study conducted by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK regions most impacted by these peak-time slowdowns, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top. The report indicates that average download speeds in Wigan drop from 167Mbps during off-peak times to 75Mbps in the evening, representing a 55% decrease.

Other areas significantly affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).

In contrast, some regions in the UK actually experience improved broadband performance during peak hours. Newport emerged as the top-performing area, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Broadband Genie explained the phenomenon, stating that like roads, internet networks can suffer congestion leading to decreased performance during peak hours. The study analyzed 144,509 broadband speed tests to identify locations where performance is most impacted during peak times, with Wigan experiencing the most significant drop of 55%.

The report also highlighted regional variations across the UK, with Scotland showing the most improvement in broadband performance during the evening, followed by Wales and the East of England. Conversely, the South West experienced a 15% reduction in speeds during peak periods compared to daytime performance.

Broadband experts suggest several ways households can enhance their home connection, such as placing routers in open, central locations away from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media recommend regular router reboots to address temporary network issues.
