“Twice Diagnosed: Young Woman Battles Bowel Cancer Twice”

Date:

A young woman, Charlotte Rutherford, faced a double diagnosis of bowel cancer in her twenties, sharing the harrowing symptoms she endured during her health battle. Charlotte, now 32, was hospitalized due to severe stomach pain, persistent vomiting, and loss of appetite. After experiencing intermittent symptoms for about 18 months, she was diagnosed in 2020 when a tumor blocked her colon, causing her inability to eat, prolonged vomiting after meals, and severe pain.

Only when she reached an “emergency state” did a CT scan reveal Stage 3B bowel cancer, with the tumor obstructing her colon and spreading to her lymph nodes. Charlotte emphasized the rapid changes in health, highlighting the importance of living life to the fullest without worrying about trivial matters.

Working as a community manager for cancer charity Mission Remission in Bristol, Charlotte had been living in Australia for three years before her worsening symptoms led to her hospitalization. Following a CT scan that unveiled a bowel obstruction necessitating urgent surgery, doctors probed into her family history of bowel cancer. A swift biopsy confirmed advanced bowel cancer that had been evolving over three to five years.

Despite successful tumor and lymph node removal by surgery, Charlotte required 12 weeks of preventive chemotherapy, ultimately achieving remission in April 2021. Regular monitoring through scans and blood tests every six months in the UK showed no cancer recurrence by the age of 29 in 2023, instilling a sense of well-being in Charlotte.

However, a sudden turn of events occurred when the cancer resurfaced in her lung just nine days later, leading to a stage 4 diagnosis as it had metastasized from the bowel. Charlotte faced a tough decision concerning further chemotherapy and its impact on her fertility, opting for a keyhole surgery to remove the small tumor in April 2023. After a brief recovery period, she received the positive news of remission once more in August 2023.

Enduring the emotional toll of battling cancer twice in her late twenties, Charlotte highlighted the sense of lagging behind her peers due to circumstances beyond her control. As Bowel Cancer Awareness Month approached, Charlotte urged young individuals and healthcare providers to stay alert to bowel cancer warning signs. Highlighting the importance of awareness, she emphasized the need for vigilance among young adults.

Bowel Cancer UK and Takeda UK’s Stage4You campaign, designed to address the challenges faced by those with stage 4 bowel cancer, gained prominence this April, shedding light on the crucial support needed for individuals in such circumstances.
