“Report Urges Ban on Ticket Resales Above Face Value”

Date:

A recent report on the live events industry has called for an immediate ban on reselling gig tickets above their original price. The report highlighted how music enthusiasts often miss out on attending popular events due to automated ticket touts who purchase tickets rapidly, leaving fans facing inflated prices.

While the government promised to implement the ban last year to prevent consumers from overpaying for tickets, no specific start date has been announced yet. The newly released review, commissioned by the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, emphasized the need for legislation to prohibit ticket resales above face value promptly and ensure strict enforcement.

The report unveiled a Fans’ Charter with 50 recommendations aimed at enhancing the live music sector. It stressed the importance of transparent communication of ticket prices in advance and fair application. Additionally, the industry was urged to resist implementing dynamic surge pricing that adjusts ticket costs based on demand.

Fans expressed dissatisfaction with major online ticketing platforms, citing high prices and inadequate measures against bots and touts. The report advised venues to clearly disclose event timings for better planning by attendees and provide complimentary earplugs and water.

Furthermore, the report proposed the establishment of a Music Fan Association akin to existing associations for other sports fans. Review chairman Lord Brennan emphasized the need for industry stakeholders to prioritize fan satisfaction and address sharp commercial practices.

The review, initiated following concerns raised by grassroots music venue operators and artists, aimed to address the financial challenges faced by the sector. The committee, under Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, stressed the significance of fan feedback in shaping a sustainable future for the music industry.

Consumer Law Expert Lisa Webb highlighted the exploitation of fans by ticket touts and called for regulatory action to protect consumers. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport affirmed its commitment to supporting the music industry and eradicating ticket touting.

In conclusion, the report’s recommendations underscored the importance of fan engagement in shaping industry practices and ensuring a thriving live music scene in the UK.
