In the outback of Queensland, Australia, lies the town of Cooladdi, once a bustling railway hub with a population of up to 270 residents. However, due to the decline in the local sheep industry and the cessation of train services, the town’s population dwindled to just two individuals, prompting them to put the entire town up for sale.
Cooladdi, located 500 miles from Brisbane, is now on the market for $400,000 (£209,920), offering the buyer the Foxtrap Roadhouse, town keys, and a four-bedroom house. This price is significantly lower than the average cost of a flat in Sydney, which stands at $935,000 (£490,688). Nearby Charleville, with a population of 3,000, has an average house price of around $210,000 (£110,208).
Despite its small size, Cooladdi boasts its own post office and postcode. The current residents, Jo Cornel and Carol Yarrow, who have resided in Cooladdi since February 2023, have decided to return to Brisbane for family reasons and retirement. Carol expressed hope that new owners would continue the town’s legacy.
While isolated, Cooladdi still attracts visitors from around 70km away, forming a close-knit community. The sale of Cooladdi is being managed by local estate agents, highlighting the potential for a change of pace and the opportunity for the town’s population to double if four buyers come forward.
