A unit at a children’s hospital in Sweden had to be cleared out due to an unknown outbreak that caused 16 staff members to fall ill, as per reports.
Queen Silvia Children’s Hospital in Gothenburg experienced a sudden illness among its surgical staff, with symptoms resembling an allergic reaction.
Taru Kontio, a safety officer from the Swedish Healthcare Association, informed a local publication that 16 staff members in a surgical unit were impacted. Symptoms included runny nose, itchy eyes, severe headaches, itchy scalp, eczema, fever, cough, hoarseness, and nasal congestion.
The affected unit was evacuated as authorities strive to manage the outbreak and identify its cause.
Surgical operations have been relocated to another section of the hospital while the affected area undergoes cleaning. Samples will be taken for testing purposes.
Jonas Nordin, the regional property manager for Västra Götaland, acknowledged the situation but stated that the root cause is yet to be determined.
