Claire’s to shutter all UK and Ireland stores

Date:

Fashion accessories retailer Claire’s has made the decision to permanently close all its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in the loss of approximately 1,300 jobs, according to administrators. Kroll, the appointed administrators, confirmed that all remaining Claire’s stores have ceased operations, and employees have been informed of their redundancy. However, concession outlets and European stores are currently unaffected and will continue to operate.

Modella Capital, a Mayfair-based financial firm that acquired 156 Claire’s stores last year, expressed intentions to potentially save over 1,000 jobs in the UK and Ireland despite acknowledging that some closures and job losses were inevitable. Unfortunately, in January of this year, Claire’s UK arm went into administration due to challenging retail conditions exacerbated by governmental policies.

There are concerns surrounding the future of TJ Jones, the rebranded WH Smith high street business, as reports suggest an imminent restructuring that may lead to a significant number of store closures. It is noted that the closure of Claire’s standalone stores does not impact its 356 concessions, which include outlets in Asda stores and its headquarters.

Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted the shift in consumer preferences away from Claire’s signature colorful and novelty jewelry towards more minimalist and curated pieces influenced by social media trends. Recent reports have indicated the closure of multiple Claire’s stores in various locations such as Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
