The spouse of a woman who disappeared during a vacation in the Bahamas has been taken into custody.
Lynette Hooker, aged 55, was reported missing on Saturday night after she went overboard on a boating excursion in the popular vacation area. Authorities stated that the American woman was journeying in an 8-foot motorboat from Hope Town to Elbow Cay, and her spouse, Brian Hooker, informed officials that she fell into the water with the boat keys, causing the engine to shut off.
Authorities on the Caribbean island mentioned that the 59-year-old man, unidentified by them, was apprehended in Abaco and is being interrogated by the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
This surprising development occurred after the couple’s daughter demanded a thorough inquiry into her mother’s disappearance, revealing that “previous issues” had surfaced. A spokesperson from the Coast Guard stated late on Wednesday that a criminal investigation has been initiated in the matter.
Law enforcement did not disclose additional specifics, such as whether charges have been filed against the spouse. Authorities added that the spouse had rowed back to the shore after his wife went overboard and promptly notified someone about her absence early on Sunday.
Police in the Bahamas remarked: “Strong currents subsequently carried her away, and he lost sight of her.” Lynette Hooker’s mother, Darlene Hamlett, expressed on Wednesday that she was “relieved to learn” about the apprehension but declined to provide further comments, stating her intent to seek more information.
Earlier on Wednesday, the mother mentioned her desire to hear more from Brian Hooker regarding the incident involving her daughter during the vacation. Ms. Hamlett stated: “I’m eager to hear his side because I haven’t had any communication from him in nearly two days.
“Our family has a history with water, and Lynette has always been around lakes, boats, sailing, and swimming. It would be a miracle if she is rescued, but I am still holding onto that hope.” Lynette and Brian had been wed for over twenty years and resided in Onsted, Michigan.
