An important warning has been issued to users of Android and iPhone devices, urging caution when charging with non-official power adapters. Many modern devices no longer come with chargers, leading consumers to seek cheaper alternatives online. However, consumer advocate group Which? has uncovered serious safety risks associated with these unofficial chargers.
Which? conducted tests on various chargers purchased from online platforms like Amazon, eBay, and others. Shockingly, nine chargers were found to pose electric shock risks due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire hazards. In one instance, a charger resembling an Apple product turned out to be a counterfeit that failed safety tests.
The investigation also revealed chargers without necessary UK safety markings and devices with unsafe internal circuitry, increasing the risk of overheating, fire, or explosions. This isn’t the first time Which? has raised concerns about unsafe electrical products sold online.
Sue Davies from Which? emphasized the life-threatening consequences of poorly designed electrical products and called for stronger product safety laws for online marketplaces. In response, Amazon and B&Q assured consumers of their commitment to safety, with Amazon removing identified chargers and actively monitoring safety concerns.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to avoid potential safety hazards associated with cheaper alternatives. It’s crucial to prioritize safety over cost when choosing charging accessories.
