“Siblings’ Journey: Caregiving for Neurodivergent Brother”

Date:

After my mother’s passing this summer, I found myself taking on a new role as my older brother’s primary caregiver. Balancing this responsibility with creating a harmonious living situation for two neurodivergent middle-aged siblings has been a learning curve.

My brother, Stuart, is a stroke survivor with autism. His daily needs include assistance with meals due to hand tremors, wheelchair transfers, grooming, bathing, and emotional support. His sensitivity to loud noises and mood swings adds another layer of complexity to our dynamic.

Reflecting on our childhood, I recall feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s introverted behavior and stimming. Society’s lack of understanding often led to hurtful comments, leaving me feeling isolated in my struggles to connect with him. Despite our differences, I now realize that we share similar challenges, with me masking my ADHD tendencies and emotional fluctuations.

Maintaining a peaceful environment involves minimizing my ADHD-induced chatter and respecting Stuart’s boundaries. While I used to distance myself from his experiences, I now actively engage with him, recognizing his silent presence as a form of communication.

Our past difficulties, including school expulsions and social withdrawal, have taught me the importance of advocacy and acceptance. As his roommate, I strive to empower Stuart in decision-making and daily activities, fostering a sense of independence and agency.

Prioritizing our relationship has meant sacrificing personal pursuits like acting classes, but the rewards of our bond outweigh any setbacks. By leveraging external support and adjusting our routines, I aim to create a supportive and understanding living arrangement for both of us.

As we navigate this new chapter together, I am committed to cherishing this second chance to strengthen our sibling bond and create a nurturing environment for two individuals navigating the complexities of neurodivergence.
