Erlinda Tan, a Filipina Canadian and Vancouver resident, shares her journey as an Edmonton Oilers fan and her newfound love for hockey. She vividly recalls the moment when Sidney Crosby clinched the golden goal in overtime during the 2010 Winter Olympics, igniting a nationwide celebration in Canada.

Having recently moved from the Philippines, Tan was amazed by how hockey could unify an entire nation. Intrigued by the sport, she slowly immersed herself in the hockey culture of her new home. Attending her first live game in 2014 between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks, she was captivated by the electrifying atmosphere of the arena and the passionate fans.

As Tan settled into life in Edmonton, she realized the profound impact of hockey on the city’s culture. From colleagues donning Oilers’ jerseys to discussions about the intense rivalry between Edmonton and Calgary, she discovered that hockey was more than just a sport in Canada—it was a way of life.

Her interest in hockey deepened over the years, with the sport becoming a significant part of her Canadian experience. Moving to Vancouver in 2016, Tan met Mike, a fellow hockey enthusiast, reigniting her passion for the game. Together, they embraced hockey nights, sharing special dinners and cheering for their favorite teams.

Despite their differences in background and interests, Tan and Mike found common ground in their love for sports. While Tan introduced Mike to the world of tennis, he educated her about the nuances of hockey. Their relationship blossomed through shared experiences at sports events and cozy nights in front of the TV.

Attending hockey games at Rogers Arena, the couple proudly supports both the Canucks and Oilers, symbolizing their unity amidst diverse allegiances.
