“Man Charged with Synagogue Vandalism in Saskatoon”

Date:

A man from Dundurn, Saskatchewan, is facing charges related to vandalism at a synagogue in Saskatoon, as reported by city police. The 31-year-old individual has been charged with three counts of mischief under $5,000. The incident occurred during a prayer service at the Congregation Agudas Israel synagogue on August 1. According to police, the man threw eggs at several vehicles and parts of the building.

After public assistance in identifying the suspect, he voluntarily surrendered to the police on Thursday following arrangements made by authorities. Subsequently, he was released on certain conditions pending his initial court appearance. While the Saskatoon police’s hate crimes unit was involved in the investigation, the suspect has not been charged with any hate crimes, as clarified in a press release.

Supt. James Oliver, stated that the term “hate crime” in Canada is typically a broad term and not a specific charge under the Criminal Code. However, any indication of bias or hate in an offense is considered an aggravating factor during sentencing. The Criminal Code does include a subsection that addresses hate-motivated mischief against religious worship buildings such as churches, mosques, synagogues, or temples.

In response to a query from CBC News, a police representative explained that the charges were based on the available evidence but could be subject to amendment by the prosecution if further evidence supports it. Rabbi Claudio Jodorkovsky expressed concern over the vandalism occurring in broad daylight, emphasizing the need for caution while also trusting in the safety of the Jewish community in Saskatoon.

According to Statistics Canada, a significant percentage of police-reported hate crimes against religious groups in 2024 were aimed at the Jewish community.
