Summer McIntosh clinched her first-ever gold medal at the Pan Pacific swimming competition by outperforming Australia’s Jenna Forrester in the women’s 400-meter individual medley in Irvine, California. McIntosh set a championship record time of four minutes and 28.01 seconds, leaving Forrester nearly three seconds behind for the silver medal, with Agostina Hein from Argentina securing the bronze.
Previously, American Elizabeth Beisel held the Pan Pacs record with a time of 4:31.99 set in 2014. McIntosh expressed satisfaction with her performance but acknowledged room for improvement, particularly in analyzing her race splits for future adjustments.
The Canadian national anthem elicited a lively response from enthusiastic spectators, especially a group of excited youngsters in the stands, which McIntosh found heartwarming. McIntosh also contributed to Canada’s success in the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay, helping secure a bronze medal alongside her teammates.
In the men’s 400 IM, Tristan Jankovics and Lorne Wigginton represented Canada, finishing in the seventh and eighth positions, respectively. Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita emerged victorious, setting a new championship record. McIntosh’s compatriot Taylor Ruck delivered a commendable performance, securing fifth place in the women’s 100 freestyle event.
Meg Harris from Australia claimed victory in the women’s 100 freestyle, surpassing American Gretchen Walsh in the final moments. Ruck, on the other hand, achieved success in multiple events on the opening day of competition, showcasing her versatility and team spirit.
Further Canadian results included notable performances by Ingrid Wilm, Oliver Dawson, Javier Acevedo, and relay teams in various categories. The Canadian swimmers displayed determination and skill throughout the competition, contributing to the country’s overall success at the prestigious event.
