“Abramovich Pressured to Release £2.5B for Ukraine Aid”

Date:

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich is facing pressure to release £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC to aid victims of the Ukraine war. Abramovich, 59, had pledged to donate the proceeds but has yet to do so amid a standoff with the UK government. The government is now poised to take legal action against him after a 90-day deadline lapsed. Tory frontbencher Lord Wolfson is representing Abramovich in a court battle in Jersey where £5.3 billion of his assets have been frozen since 2022.

Labour MP Joe Powell has urged Abramovich to release the funds promptly to support Ukraine. The government is adamant that Abramovich must fulfill his commitment to donate the promised amount. Rupert Skilbeck from Redress group commended the government’s move to resolve the situation and emphasized the urgency of delivering humanitarian aid to Ukrainian war victims.

Abramovich, who amassed his wealth in post-Soviet Russia, has been linked to Vladimir Putin. While the conflict in Ukraine persists, Abramovich is reportedly enjoying a lavish lifestyle, including owning a luxurious superyacht and private jets. Despite legal disputes and government restrictions, Abramovich’s lawyers assert his dedication to charitable causes. The ongoing dispute highlights the complexities surrounding the billionaire’s charitable commitments and the government’s scrutiny of his actions.
