Amazon is discontinuing support for older Kindle models, prompting users to upgrade to newer devices before May 20, 2026. Affected models include the Kindle 5 and Kindle Paperwhite (1st Generation), among others. Although existing books will remain accessible, users will no longer be able to purchase or download new content from the Kindle Store on these devices.
Amazon is proactively notifying users via email about the upcoming restriction on new downloads. To facilitate the transition, the company is offering a 20% discount on select new Kindle models and a £15 eBook credit. Accounts and Kindle Libraries will remain accessible through the free Kindle app and Kindle for Web.
The affected Kindle models, such as the Kindle 1st Generation (2007) and Kindle Touch (2011), will no longer support new content purchases after the specified date. Users can still read previously downloaded books but will not be able to acquire additional titles. Deregistering or factory resetting these devices will render them unusable.
Considering the end of support for these older models, upgrading to newer devices is recommended, especially with Amazon’s recent launch of the latest Kindle Scribe devices in the UK. These new models offer enhanced features like thinner design, faster performance, and for the first time, a color display option.
The newly released Kindle Scribe models start at £449.99, while the color-display variant, Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, is priced from £569.99. Users are encouraged to take advantage of the promotional offers and transition to the latest Kindle devices for an improved reading experience.
