Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was part of a 10-member international mountaineering team that perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, as confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s first endeavor to climb an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.
Residing in San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had publicly shared earlier this year that she was shutting down her Pilates studio to embark on a new journey filled with uncertainty. Her family described her as a radiant presence who was cherished deeply by her loved ones and friends.
The search for Geis commenced on July 31 following the tragic avalanche that engulfed the group led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja on Broad Peak. Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier from Nepal, achieved fame for scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in a record-breaking 189 days in 2019, an extraordinary feat documented in the Netflix film “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” His record was surpassed in 2023.
Climbing expeditions in northern Pakistan are fraught with risks due to avalanches, falling ice and rocks, high altitudes, and erratic weather conditions.
