British boxer Anthony Joshua paid his respects to his deceased friends, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, at a funeral home after being released from the hospital following a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries in the crash, has returned home in Nigeria to continue his recovery. He visited the funeral home with his mother to bid farewell to his friends.
A statement from local government officials expressed condolences to the families of the deceased individuals and prayed for their souls. Joshua, although saddened by the loss of his friends, has been discharged from the hospital and is now recuperating at home.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State acknowledged the support and concern from the public regarding the tragic incident. They also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his assistance and praised the medical team at Lagoon Hospital Ikoyi for their exceptional care.
The car accident occurred when Joshua’s black SUV collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the deaths of his friends. Investigations are ongoing, with authorities searching for the truck driver who illegally parked on the highway shoulder. According to Nigerian police, overspeeding and a burst tire on the SUV contributed to the accident.
The driver of the SUV, who has been discharged from the hospital, provided a statement to the police. Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesperson for Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, highlighted the overspeeding and loss of control that led to the tragic collision.
