“Beware of Black Friday Scams: Google Warns Shoppers”

Date:

Google has recently released a significant update, and individuals engaging in online shopping this month should take heed. With November marking the start of Black Friday deals from major retailers worldwide, consumers can expect great discounts but also need to be wary of potential scams.

According to Google’s latest fraud and scams advisory, cybercriminals tend to ramp up their fraudulent activities during peak shopping periods like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. These malicious actors exploit the high consumer demand and urgency associated with these events to deceive shoppers with fake offers, resulting in financial losses and data breaches.

To avoid falling victim to scams, online shoppers and email users are advised to stay vigilant for suspicious deals or notifications that seem too good to be true. Scammers utilize various sophisticated tactics, such as creating fake online storefronts, running deceptive ad campaigns, and launching phishing or smishing attacks during this time.

Phishing, a common cyberattack method, involves criminals pretending to be trustworthy sources to trick individuals into disclosing sensitive information like passwords and credit card details. During sales events, fake emails claiming missed deliveries or fake prizes are prevalent, along with phishing attempts impersonating delivery services to extract fake fees or promote false rewards.

While Google implements technology to combat scammers by blocking fake emails and websites, users are encouraged to remain alert. Google has introduced new protections against package tracking scams for users of certain devices who opt-in to Enhanced Protection in Chrome, providing additional security features like local Gemini models and Safe Browsing. Additionally, Google has enhanced protections for Google Messages users to safeguard against these fraudulent activities.

As the holiday shopping season heats up, staying cautious and verifying the authenticity of deals and notifications remain crucial to safeguarding personal information and finances.
