Former Toronto Blue Jays player, manager, and broadcaster John Albert Martinez, known as Buck Martinez, was honored with induction into the team’s Hall of Excellence. This honor was part of the Blue Jays’ 50th season celebrations, where a special section was unveiled to recognize the franchise’s top contributors. The ceremony took place at Rogers Centre, behind right field.
Martinez, now 77 years old, received the tribute before a Blue Jays game against the Seattle Mariners. He expressed his surprise and gratitude, stating that he did not fully grasp the significance of the occasion. The former player turned broadcaster enjoyed immense popularity across Canada during his time with the team.
Newcomer Brett Bateman stopped Martinez under the stands to offer congratulations, acknowledging Martinez’s impact on the Blue Jays and their fan base. Martinez shared an anecdote about being recognized in England for his voice by a group of ladies, emphasizing the pride Canadians have in supporting the team.
Martinez now joins a prestigious group of individuals in the Hall of Excellence, including Jose Bautista, Paul Beeston, George Bell, Joe Carter, and others. The Level of Excellence, where the names of honorees have been displayed, will be relocated within the stadium for better visibility to fans starting next season.
The Californian, now residing in Florida, flew to Toronto for the ceremony alongside other Blue Jays legends. Dave Stieb praised Martinez as an exceptional teammate who helped him stay focused during challenging moments on the field. The new Hall of Excellence aims to honor various figures who have shaped the Blue Jays, from players to broadcasters.
Martinez’s career with the Blue Jays spanned multiple roles, including catcher, manager, and broadcaster. Despite battling cancer, he made significant contributions to the team. His broadcasting career, which began in 1982, saw him call over 4,000 Blue Jays games. Martinez’s final broadcast was during the World Series, where the Los Angeles Dodgers emerged victorious.
In addition to his Blue Jays tenure, Martinez provided commentary for various sports networks and was honored with the Jack Graney Award from the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2023 for his impactful contributions to baseball in Canada.
