“Texas AG Probes Fruit of the Loom, Hanes Chemical Concerns”

Date:

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has initiated a probe to determine if Fruit of the Loom and Hanes utilize harmful substances in the manufacturing of children’s undergarments. Paxton has issued civil investigative demands to both companies, expressing concerns about the potential impact of these chemicals on children’s well-being. While no accusations have been made against the companies, responses from Fruit of the Loom and Berkshire are pending.

In response to the investigation, Gildan, the parent company of Hanes, has affirmed its commitment to cooperating fully and adhering to stringent manufacturing and sourcing standards to comply with industry regulations on hazardous chemicals. The company emphasized its dedication to delivering safe and top-quality products for consumers.

Paxton highlighted the shift towards synthetic materials like polyester and spandex in the garment industry to meet consumer demands for affordable merchandise. Research indicates that synthetic fabrics can release microplastics, and certain chemicals used in textile production, such as bisphenols and phthalates, have been linked to health issues like cancer and hormone disruption. PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” have raised concerns due to their persistence in the environment.

The Attorney General emphasized the importance of safeguarding children by ensuring that essential products are free from toxic substances. This investigation follows a similar inquiry into Lululemon Athletica’s activewear earlier this year, focusing on the presence of potentially harmful chemicals.

Paxton, a Republican candidate for a U.S. Senate seat, faces competition from Democrat James Talarico in a closely watched race leading up to the midterm elections on November 3. The outcome of this investigation could have implications for the ongoing debate surrounding chemical safety in consumer products.
