“Whey Protein Price Surge Squeezes Consumers”

Date:

As Jennifer Mason aims to increase her protein intake, the surge in whey protein powder prices has come as a shock to her wallet. Juggling new expenses as a recent mom, she is reconsidering her shopping choices, opting to trim her usage of protein supplements and focus on obtaining protein from natural foods.

The escalating demand for whey protein among food manufacturers and fast-food chains has led to its integration into a wide array of products, from snacks to beverages. This trend, coupled with the ongoing U.S.-Canada trade tensions, is causing shortages and driving prices to unprecedented levels. Consequently, consumers may soon bear the brunt of these cost hikes.

Various renowned brands are incorporating whey protein into their offerings to cater to the health-conscious consumer base. Influencers in the fitness realm are advocating for “protein-maxxing,” promoting the constant consumption of dietary protein. Additionally, individuals taking weight-loss medications like Ozempic are inclining towards higher protein intake to prevent muscle loss.

Whey protein concentrate, a key ingredient in high-protein foods, is facing a strain on its global supply due to these escalating demands. John Murray, overseeing marketing at Daryl’s Bars, a protein snack producer in Tecumseh, Ont., highlights the challenges smaller businesses face in securing sufficient whey amidst bulk orders from major corporations.

The majority of Canada’s whey protein concentrate is imported from the U.S., where prices have more than doubled over the past year and a half. The U.S. Dairy Export Council notes an insatiable domestic demand for high-protein whey, leading to reduced availability for exports and subsequent price hikes.

To cope with the mounting costs, Daryl’s Bars has had to increase prices on its protein snacks, as absorbing the rising expenses has become unsustainable. The reliance on Wisconsin for most of their whey protein supply leaves them with limited alternatives, prompting a preference for sourcing domestically whenever feasible.

The ongoing trade conflict is further straining food manufacturers as retaliatory tariffs imposed by the Canadian government on American whey imports have exacerbated the pricing challenges. Businesses in Canada can seek relief through Ottawa’s tariff-remission initiative, provided they prove the unavailability of domestic or non-U.S. alternatives.

Mike von Massow, a food economist at the University of Guelph, points out the complexities involved in quickly boosting whey supply, given its status as a byproduct of cheese production. While the U.S. dominates whey protein production due to its significant cheese output, Canada’s limited processing capacity poses hurdles in meeting escalating demands.

Anticipating a ripple effect throughout the supply chain, von Massow foresees sustained price hikes in protein products. Despite the cost surge, some consumers like Audrey Marcoux plan to absorb the extra expenses due to their workout routines. However, others, like Nathan Bugiardini, are contemplating scaling back purchases if prices continue to soar.

In light of the soaring whey protein prices, some consumers are exploring plant-based alternatives and unprocessed whole foods as cost-effective substitutes. Melania Antic, a 19-year-old consumer, expresses dismay over the financial strain caused by the price surge, impacting her motivation to maintain her workout regimen.
