“Century-Long Wait Ends: Stolen Teepee Cover Returned”

Date:

After being missing for a century, a stolen teepee cover is set to be returned to its rightful owners and community in Saskatchewan. Chief Cory (Okimow) Dustyhorn of Kawacatoose First Nation worked with the Smithsonian Institution to reclaim the cover, which was crafted by his great-great-grandfather over two years.

Accompanied by some family members and Indigenous studies professor Andrew Miller from the First Nations University of Canada, Dustyhorn is embarking on a 29-hour journey to Washington, D.C. to retrieve the precious item. They commenced their journey with a pipe ceremony, seeking guidance from an elder for a clear path ahead.

The emotional journey to reclaim the teepee cover has been a long time coming. Dustyhorn expressed gratitude for those who supported and encouraged him to pursue its return, especially those who are no longer present to witness this momentous occasion.

Phillip Dustyhorn, the eldest family member, is also part of the expedition. He reminisced about hearing the story of the teepee cover throughout his upbringing, highlighting the joy of reclaiming something that was wrongfully taken from their family without compensation.

Andrew Miller played a crucial role in assisting the family throughout the repatriation process, attending numerous meetings and providing unwavering support. The family will meet face-to-face with Smithsonian representatives at the National Museum of the American Indian to retrieve the teepee cover, unseen by any family member since 1926.

The journey to reclaim the teepee cover has been arduous, involving extensive paperwork, permit applications, and persistent communication with the museum. Miller expressed relief and anticipation for the conclusion of this lengthy process.

Upon their return, the community plans to commemorate the retrieval of the teepee cover with a celebratory event and ceremony.
