“Exploring Canada’s Most Captivating Lighthouses”

Date:

Canada’s extensive coastline, lakes, and other water bodies are safeguarded by over 750 lighthouses and long-range lights, ensuring safe navigation for ships. These iconic structures not only guide maritime traffic but also hold historical significance for the communities they overlook.

In a quest to uncover the most captivating lighthouses across the country, we have identified eight unique beacons that are truly worth a visit.

Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, located in Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, stands out as one of Canada’s most photographed lighthouses. Legend has it that the village was named after a shipwreck survivor named Peggy, although its name may simply be derived from its location in St. Margarets Bay. The picturesque village, with its granite shores and vibrant lobster boats, offers a delightful setting to explore.

The West Point Lighthouse in West Point, Prince Edward Island, boasts being the tallest lighthouse on the island at 21 meters. Offering stunning views of the Northumberland Strait and Cedar Dunes Provincial Park, this black and white beacon has been transformed into an inn since 1987, providing guests with a unique stay experience. The accompanying museum showcases artifacts and tales from its remarkable 151-year history.

In Colwood, British Columbia, the Fisgard Lighthouse, established in 1860, stands as the first permanent beacon on the West Coast. This 17-meter tower, designated a National Historic Site, continues to guide mariners with its battery-powered light. The lighthouse, situated on Fisgard Island at the entrance of Esquimalt Harbour, offers breathtaking views of the Juan de Fuca Strait and, on clear days, the majestic Olympic Mountains in Washington state.

Race Rocks Lighthouse, near Victoria in the Juan de Fuca Strait, British Columbia, was erected in 1860 and is the second oldest lighthouse on the Pacific coast. Perched on a small rocky island, the 24.4-meter tall striped beacon is part of the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve, renowned for its diverse marine wildlife and exceptional cold-water dive sites.

In Newfoundland, the Ferryland Lighthouse overlooks the Atlantic from a grassy hill, making it a popular spot for picnics and whale-watching. The adjacent cottage, once home to celebrated artist Gerald Squires, prepares packed lunches for visitors to enjoy against the scenic backdrop.

Cape Spear Lighthouse in St. John’s, Newfoundland, stands as the oldest surviving lighthouse in the province, marking the easternmost point in North America. Early risers can witness the continent’s first sunrise and may even spot whales or icebergs on the horizon. The nearby East Coast Trail offers further exploration opportunities with its berry-picking grounds and stunning coastal vistas.

Gibraltar Point Lighthouse, situated on Toronto Island, is the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes and a prominent city landmark. Aside from its historical significance, the lighthouse is also famous for a haunting ghost story, attracting curious tourists and paranormal enthusiasts. A ferry ride to the island provides a captivating view of Toronto’s skyline.

The Cap-des-Rosiers Lighthouse in Gaspé, Quebec, stands tall at 34.1 meters, making it the tallest lighthouse in Canada. Perched on a cliff edge, this beacon was constructed in 1858 following numerous shipwrecks in the perilous waters where the St. Lawrence River meets the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Climbing to the top rewards visitors with a panoramic view of the gulf, offering chances to witness breaching whales and the rugged cliffs of Forillon National Park.
